Continuing to expand its sustainable energy investments with the goal of making clean and renewable energy more accessible, Kalyon Energy has been awarded the Konya/Karapınar tender with a capacity of 520 MWp under the YEKA Solar Energy Resource Area (YEKA GES 2024) auctions.
As part of the YEKA GES 2024 tender process organized by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Kalyon Energy submitted the most competitive bid for the Karapınar project.
Dr. Murtaza Ata: “A Sister Plant is Coming to Kalyon Karapınar SPP”
Commenting on the new project, Dr. Murtaza Ata, Board Member and CEO of Kalyon Energy, stated:
"I would like to congratulate our country and the entire energy sector on the successful completion of the YEKA GES 2024 auctions conducted by our Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources across various regions of Türkiye. These projects play a vital role in reducing our country's dependence on imported energy and achieving our sustainability and climate objectives.
As Kalyon Energy, the company behind Kalyon Karapınar SPP—one of the world’s largest and Europe’s largest solar power plants with an installed capacity of 1,350 MWp—we are delighted to announce the development of a new 520 MWp solar power plant located south of Karapınar SPP, which we proudly refer to as its sister facility."
The new 520 MWp solar power plant will be constructed on a total area of 6,434,883 square meters. The facility is expected to generate approximately 1,065,000 MWh of electricity annually while preventing nearly 700,000 tons of carbon emissions each year.
Its annual electricity generation will be sufficient to meet the residential energy needs of a city with a population of approximately 900,000 people. The project is also expected to create significant employment opportunities, providing jobs for approximately 1,100 people during the construction phase and around 75 people during operations, thereby contributing to local economic development.
“Kalyon PV Will Supply the Panels with Up to 90% Local Content”
Dr. Murtaza Ata continued: "Since the launch of the YEKA model in 2017, our Ministry has prioritized domestic manufacturing alongside renewable energy development. We are particularly proud that, as with Kalyon Karapınar SPP, the approximately 870,000 solar panels to be used in this new project will be supplied by Kalyon PV, which manufactures with a local content rate of up to 90%."
